1. Read a book with a person on the cover
This is the typical cliché YA romance. We follow Jessa, who has a secret crush on her brother’s best friend. One summer he notices her and falls in love with her. They suddenly start a secret romance but they have to hide their relationship from her abusive father and her brother. Kit (the love interest) gets redeployed to Irak and drama ensues. The characters are one dimensional and the story wasn’t very original. If you like a lot of drama you will like this but it wasn’t my cup of tea.
2. Read a hyped book
YA, Contemporary, LGBTQ+
This was an absolute heartbreaking but beautiful story. I fell in love with Adam Silvera’s writing style. His writing style feels authentic to the voice of a teenage boy. He writes beautifully about grief and captures exactly how a human being experiences grief. Grief is messy and Griffin shows you how difficult it is to deal with it. I loved Griffin because he felt realistic. He made a lot of mistakes and screwed up but that’s what humans do, we are not perfect. I loved the way Adam Silvera’s split the chapters up. There were chapters from the past when Griffin started a relationship with Theo and the present when Theo dies and you slowly discover how they ended up broken up and Griffin hanging out with Theo’s new boyfriend. This is a raw and beautiful book and I’ll be definitely reading other books from Adam in the future.
3. Finish a book in one day
YA, Fantasy, Novella
This novella is part of the Remnant Chronicles and sheds some light on an important historical backstory that is often talked about in the series. I really liked this novella, it didn’t wow me but I appreciate learning more about this complex world.
4. Read about a character that is very different from you
I was supposed to read this in the weekend when I came back from Greece but I left immediately for France afterwards so I only read 1/4 of this novella but I plan on continuing it because it was fascinating so far. I love getting some backstory on a villain.
5. Finish a book completely outdoors
Absolutely fell in love with her modern poetry. I might go more in depth in a separate review about the poems but I loved them and I will pick up more. The poems hit hard and I loved some more but overall this collection was a win.
6. Read a book you bought because of the cover
I liked the “Stranger Things” vibe I got from this Graphic Novel but I wasn’t blown away by it. The art style stands out the most but the characters felt very unrealistic. These are supposedly 12 year olds but they acts like 18 year olds. I also find it odd that is a graphic novel about girls but the team that created this story consists of men. I don’t think I’ll continue this series honestly.
7. Read 7 books
Obviously did not read 7 book because I unexpectedly left for France right after Greece but I’ll try to read this in August. I am happy with having read 5 books even if I didn’t stick to my original TBR.
I hope your BookTube-A-Thon went well! Tell me in the comments your favorite book you read that week.
